Description
Amber and Amethyst, the crystals and colours used in jewellery and this collection of crocuses will similarly bejewel your early Spring garden. Three varieties of crocuses make up this stunning and interesting collection. Crocus olivieri subsp. balansae 'Orange Monarch' - named after the monarch butterfly with burnt orange on the outside of the petals and amber on the inside of the petals; Crocus chrysanthus 'Herald' - chocolate coloured outside petals, lemon coloured inside petals, highly fragrant and flowering earlier than other crocuses, make this much sought after by gardeners; Crocus fleischeri - a very distinctive species with striking small flowers which open wide as would a summer daisy. Few things in the garden stir the heart more than the first crocuses of Spring because their arrival means winter is losing its icy grip and warmer times are over the horizon. Crocuses provide a spurt of colour just as you need it. For the hibernating insects emerging from their slumbers, crocuses offer a vital supply of nectar and pollen.
