Description

You will be amazed as up to 100 exotic-looking, lily-like blooms are produced on each Alstroemeria plant between June and November. Originating from South Africa, Alstroemeria (or Peruvian Lilies) form fleshy tubers beneath the ground which increase each year to make an impressive clump of attractive foliage. The perfect base from which many stems rise producing buds that open to reveal stunning, exotic-looking, blotched blooms that could have been painted by a brush. Alstroemeria are so easy to look after and are bothered by very few pests. Just remember to pick or deadhead by pulling the flowers stems gently from the bottom of the plant, the resulting 'wound' then initiates new flowers. Your home and garden will be full of these exotic-looking stems that last up to 14 days in a vase. The more you 'pull', the more they flower, whether in borders or in containers. In the world of flowers, Alstroemeria blooms represent friendship. Each of the five petals a reminder of respect, commitment, humour, patience, understand and empathy. Alstroemeria prefer to be grown in well-drained soil in a partly shaded sheltered site reaching an approximate height of 70-90cm and spreading to 45-60cm. Being herbaceous perennials, these beauties will die back during winter, to re-emerge the following spring.

H - Hardy - are happy down to at least -5C (23F).
HH - Half hardy - can withstand down to around 0C (32F).
T - Tender - may be damaged by temperatures below 5C (41F)
WT Warm temperate can withstand temperatures between 5-10 C (41-50 F)
