Description

Alium cristophii or The Star of Persia is a mid-sized ornamental onion which is ideal for the middle of a border or planted mixed containers. Large globular spheres consisting of around 100 small lilac flowers wave majestically on tall stems with complemented by low foliage. The star-shaped flowers have a metallic sheen and are about 20cm (8 inches) in width. This flower is a Chelsea Flower Show garden favourite. Alliums are grown from bulbs and are best planted in well-drained soil. They prefer sheltered sunny spots and are easy to maintain. Cristophii is a hardy perennial which provides a magnificent show of flowers year after year. The bulbs are planted in autumn (September-October) to provide a summer display. Ornamental onions provide long-lasting cut flowers (up to 2 weeks) for vase or bouquet. The seedheads can be dried for display. Once the flowering season is over large clumps can be divided.
