An unusual and desirable climber, which can easily be trained up a wall, or over a garden structure. Akebia quinate is also known as the Chocolate Vine. You will have a sumptuous fragrance though no temptation to nibble, so no calories - amazing! The blooms are intriguing. Three thick, waxy-looking petals come together to create inverted cup-shaped blooms, which are held in clusters along the stems The luxurious, spicy scent with a hint of vanilla, emanates from the maroon-purple flowers from March to May. In the warmth of summer, a purple, elongated fruit often follows, which can be eaten! Bright green semi-evergreen three lobed leaves provide winter interest in milder winters, developing a pretty, purple tinge. Akebia prefer to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in sun, reaching an approximate height of 900cm. Being a fully hardy perennial, Akebia will flourish growing outside all year round for you to enjoy for many years, with no frost protection required.
