Description

Adaptable flowers which naturalise and bring sculpted, hood-like blooms - reminiscent of pixie hats, or hooded robes from which they take one of their common names. Large, captivating, almost tubular petals are borne in cooling hues from July through to August or September each year. Borne on branching spires above divided, glossy foliage - these beauties will bring enduring interest to pots, open ground and woodland gardens. They can also be cut for a vase but do take care to wear gloves as direct contact with the skin should be avoided. These attractive and mythical plants are native to mountainous areas of Europe and Asia and drenched in folklore - mostly related to killing unwanted animals such as wolves, from which the other common name 'wolfsbane' is derived. Plants in the Admirable Aconitum Collection prefer moist, well-drained soil in full shade to full sun - with a preference for some sunshine away from the hottest part of the day. Fully hardy, herbaceous perennials which will naturalise when provided with the right conditions and spread up to 50-60cm. Collection comprises: bicoloured carmichaelii 'Cloudy' H: 1.2m; dainty 'Purple Sparrow' H: 60cm; and AGM holder, henryi 'Sparks Variety' H: 1.5m.
