Description
A shade dwelling majestic perennial, tall and elegant, Actaea simplex Pink Spike is the perfect plant for a shady spot that does not dry out, and pink flowers are unusual for shade. Dramatic clumps of showy, dark mahogany ferny foliage are accentuated by tall, architectural, highly scented, pale pink, bottlebrush-like flowers from August to October, each matures to a darker pink, a feast for every passing butterfly and bee. Attractive berries follow soon afterwards. Actaea simplex Pink Spike is rabbit and deer resistant and will grow to a mature height of approximately 1.5m spreading to around 45-60cm. Actaea prefer to be grown in moist but not boggy soil in dappled, part or full shade to keep a good foliage colour. Known since 1732 as Cimicifuga until DNA evidence in 2000 uncovered they were part of the Actaea family. Given the common name Baneberry, the shiny berries are loved by birds but keep away from children.
