Handsome and elegant, the architectural Acanthus spinosus leaf motif was used as a decoration of Greco-Roman and Classical architecture centuries before Christ. Emerging in the spring, an abundance of fast growing, jagged leaves form large, striking clumps. In summer, tall stems rise, holding dozens of buds. The flourish of pale, hooded blooms with white lips and bright purple bracts, contrast beautifully against the foliage.Flowering from May to August, the stems make an architectural addition to your indoor floral arrangements. Originating from the Mediterranean, they are deer and rabbit resistant, and the blooms are a great source of nectar for friendly insects that will visit.Reliable and fairly indestructible garden plants, acanthus are tolerant of a wide range of conditions and as such are useful for trickier spots. Commonly known as Spiny Bear's Breeches, Acanthus spinosus is a hardy, herbaceous perennial, dying back and becoming dormant during winter. Sprouting again in spring it will reach a mature height of up to 1.5m each season, spreading to 50-100cm.
