It's that time of year again here at Hayloft when we are planning ahead and on the lookout for some new and exciting plants ready for next year.
To kickstart our search for 2020 bedding plant inspiration, we took off to the Oxfordshire countryside to visit Ball Colegrave's Summer Showcase. Ball Colegrave has been conducting plant trials for 54 years and their 8-acre site was certainly choc-full with plants.
From Dahlias, to Petunias, to Nemesia, to Begonias, there was certainly no shortage of colourful blooms to admire. In fact, there were a total of 200 new plants being showcased.
Despite picking perhaps one of the worst days to visit weather-wise (it was pouring for most of the day, thank goodness we wore wellies!) the plethora of beautiful plants brightened up the day in no time.
Colour combinations were a key trend, with every display showcasing a different wave of colour, from shades of pink, to funky neons, to this striking mix of bright yellow and blue. There was even a whole wall of plants that took you through the entire colour spectrum!
One particular highlight has to be the creation of a bee-friendly garden. The bee population is currently in decline and some bee species are under threat of extinction, so it's more important now than ever to include bee-friendly plants in our gardens. This mock-garden certainly left us feeling inspired!

One plant that was showcased in abundance was Begonia, with a whole outdoor section being dedicated to their beautiful blooms. We certainly can't get enough of them, as they're so easy to grow yet they make such a big, bright impact in the garden. Varieties such as the Sweet Spice series are particularly wonderful as they give off the most glorious scent too.

Now that we've got our creative juices flowing, its back to the office to start working on some new catalogues. Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for plenty of new plants to choose from!
Happy gardening Haylofters!
