Jobs For September

September is an interesting time of year where the weather usually becomes cooler, although the occasional hot spell will often greet us and we are happy to receive it. It is not quite boots and jumpers weather yet, so make sure you embrace the last dregs of warmth and sunshine.

  • Feed and deadhead plants within hanging baskets and containers as these will often continue to flourish and thrive until the first frosts take hold.
  • Keep watering new plants and shrubs, alongside containers and baskets as hot spells may still occur and warm, dry weather lingers across our gardens.
  • Prune late flowering shrubs.
  • Continue to deadhead perennial plants to extend their performance. Annuals that have finished flowering should be pulled up and composted.
  • Clean out cold frames and greenhouses, to prepare them for autumn.
  • It is possible to take semi-ripe cuttings of hardy shrubs – Make sure you do not take them too late unless you can keep them under cover.
  • Some hedging may require a final and light pruning to tidy up appearances before the autumn and winter.
  • Plant spring flowering bulbs such as Narcissus, Crocus and Cyclamen
