Jobs For February

February brings new-found optimism with bulbs appearing, lighter and longer evenings and warmer temperatures. The garden gradually comes to life and there a little more to do than in the previous month. Embrace this often-busy month and prepare for impending spring.

  • Improve heavy soils with organic matter or sharp sand to improve drainage and growing conditions.
  • Remove weeds as you see them as they can become prevalent during this time of year.
  • Top up containers with additional compost and water well during periods of dry weather.
  • Deadhead winter flowering plants to encourage a second flush of flowers during spring.
  • Plant roses, shrubs, trees, hedging and climbers.
  • Check on stakes, ties and supports and replace those that are damaged or missing.
  • Prune trees by removing old or dead branches – heavier work will need to be undertaken by a professional.
  • Cut back climbers to a desired shape and size.
  • Tidy and prune deciduous plants and shrubs.
  • Repair fencing and structures that have been damaged by adverse weather conditions.
  • When signs of frost have passed, plant bulbs and plants such as Eucomis, Liatris, Agapanthus and Roses
