About Zinnia

Zinnia are annuals, perennials or sub-shrubs that showcase a brilliant display of vibrant colour long into the summer over lance-shaped foliage and long, elegant stems. Flowers will closely resemble that of a daisy, with double varieties looking more like a Dahlia, each with impressively large stamens. Zinnia are best located in flower beds and borders within courtyard, coastal, cottage and informal garden settings. They also make great container plants. You should expect to see Zinnia grow to an approximate height and spread of 30cm (12”). Zinnia are native to Mexico, Central America and South Western America.

How to plant Zinnia

Zinnia are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Amend the planting area with a generous amount of compost as this will improve the growing conditions of the native soil, improving flower and foliage performance. Zinnia are best positioned in a sheltered area with full access to full sun.

How to care for Zinnia

You should implement a moderate watering schedule to maintain healthy moisture levels. Zinnia should be watered from the base to ensure optimum growth and development. Deadhead Zinnia after the flowering period as this will encourage profuse blooming for the following season. Protect these plants from extreme cold weather, ensuring they are kept in a warm environment before the first frosts are due to take hold.

How to propagate Zinnia

It is possible to propagate Zinnia by seed sown in pots during the spring.
