Zaluzianskya are annuals or perennial plants with over 54 species that are native to South Africa. They are often referred to as ‘Night Phlox’. Evergreen and often aromatic leaves are framed in a compact habit that form an attractive dome-shaped mound topped with white, heart-shaped petals and decorated with colourful flecks of deep maroon. These attractive petals often close during the hottest part of the day, opening again in the evening to release a heavenly scent. They are best suited to pots and containers within an informal garden setting. You should expect to see Zaluzianskya grow to an approximate height and spread of 30cm (12”).
Zaluzianskya are best planted in moist, well-drained soil. It is recommended to amend the planting area with plenty of organic matter and grit. Dig a hole that is the same depth and twice as wide as the root ball and place your plant into position, backfilling with soil and watering thoroughly and deeply. Zaluzianskya should be spaced 30cm (12”) apart where they will have sufficient space to grow. They should be positioned in a sheltered area of full sun where they will thrive best.
Zaluzianskya will need to be kept in moist conditions and so it is vital that you maintain a thorough watering schedule, reducing the volume of water provided during winter. These plants will need protection from the cold and so you may wish to transfer Zaluzianskya to a warmer environment such as a conservatory or a light and airy porch. Once flowering has finished you should cut back hard immediately.
It is possible to propagate Zaluzianskya by stem tip cuttings during the summer.
