Position – Sun or part shade
Soil – Well-drained
Flowering Period – Summer/Autumn
Hardiness – Semi-hardy
Watsonia are tender to semi-hardy perennial herbs that grow from corms and produce spike of trumpet (or bugle) shaped flowers in summer/autumn amongst sword shaped foliage. They are well-suited to a tropical style garden. You should expect to see your Watsonia grow to an approximate height of up to 1.5m (5ft), depending on variety and an approximate spread of up to 50cm (20in).
Watsonia are best planted in a soil of sand, chalk or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun. Watsonia like the sun but be careful to not get the soil too dry. Can be grown in a pot buried in the ground during the summer so it’s part of your border, then the pot can be lifted in the autumn and kept undisturbed in a garage over the winter.
Apply a mulch during the winter for protection. Deadhead as required. May require staking to maintain a good upright habit in windy locations.
It is possible to propagate Watsonia by division in spring or by seed sown in autumn.
