About Vitis

Vitis are energetic deciduous climbing shrubs that provide an abundance of colour during summer. Deeply lobed foliage will turn bronze purple, darkening throughout the summer months and turning crimson-red during the autumn. Small green flowers are often followed by large clusters of often edible fruits. Vitis are best suited wall side borders within cottage and informal garden settings. They also make perfect container plants. You should expect to see Vitis grow to an approximate height of 2m (80”).

How to plant Vitis

Vitis are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in a site that is sheltered but that will attract full sunlight, ensuring there is protection from frost pockets. At the time of planting, amend the soil with a light dressing of well-rotted manure and compost, mixing in well and providing a thorough watering once in place.

How to care for Vitis

In late winter/early spring, apply a general-purpose fertiliser to the base of your shrub and feed every fortnight with a tomato feed until the fruit starts to ripen. Although Vitis are relatively drought tolerant, they will require thorough watering throughout the summer to prevent the roots from becoming too dry. Prune after the flowering period where the shoots appear on the current year’s growth.

How to propagate Vitis

It is possible to propagate Vitis by hardwood cuttings.
