Verbena are annuals, perennials or sub-shrubs, native to North America with narrow, lance-shaped foliage that are attached to angular, rigid stems. Flattened clusters of vibrant blooms will provide desirable height and colour throughout the summer months. Verbena are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Verbena grow to an approximate height of 60cm (24”) and a spread of 40cm (16”).
Verbena are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. You should amend the planting area with a generous amount of compost or organic matter and mix thoroughly. Water well and deeply to settle the soil in place. These plants will benefit from 8 hours of sunlight each day, unless situated in particularly hot climates, where they will appreciate relief from the intense midday sun.
Verbena are intolerant of extended periods of wet soil and their roots will rot if left for prolonged periods of time. Amend your soil with grit or sand if this is the case. Water your plants regularly until they are well established when water should be applied when the soil is dry. Verbena should be fed during the spring using an all-purpose liquid fertiliser. A protective mulch consisting of leaf mould or compost should be applied during the autumn. This would also be a good time to pinch out the tips as this will encourage a bushier habit. As these plants are borderline hardy, they will need protection from winter damage.
