About Verbascum

Verbascum are either annuals, biennials, perennials or sub-shrubs that showcase tall, elegant and architectural framework consisting of well-branched stems, delicate and upright clusters of unfurling saucer-shaped blooms and rippled green foliage. These plants are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, informal and cottage garden settings where they will attract an army of bees. You should expect to see Verbascum grow to an approximate height of 1.5m (5’) and a spread of 60cm (24”).

How to plant Verbascum

Verbascum are best planted in well-drained soil of chalk, loam and sand within an alkaline PH balance. Ensure they are planted in an area that does not retain water as Verbascum will not tolerate waterlogged soil and will instead thrive in direr conditions, preferably with access to full sunlight. Water newly planted Verbascum thoroughly and ensure they are kept moist until they are fully established.

How to care for Verbascum

Once fully mature, you may water Verbascum sparingly as these plants are relatively drought tolerant and will thrive in dry soil. Cut back taller stems in the autumn if you do not wish for your plants to self-propagate.

How to propagate Verbascum

It is possible to propagate Verbascum by division during late spring or by root cuttings during the winter.
