Urginea are bulbous perennial plants with a fascinating, thick flower stalk that produces a clustered cone of small and intriguing star-shaped blooms coloured in lime green, white and pale purple. Broad, fleshy foliage acts as a fantastic plinth to these stunning blooms with long sword-shaped leaves. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within an informal garden setting. You should expect to see Urginea grow to an approximate height of 1.8m (6’) and a spread of 60cm (24”).
Urginea are best planted in well-drained soil of sand or loam within an acidic, neutral or alkaline PH balance. When planting your bulb, you should make sure it is partially visible above the soil, spacing bulbs approximately 60cm (24”) apart to allow room for your plants to spread. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle your bulbs in place and to encourage a healthy root development system. Urginea are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun as this is where they will thrive best.
During the summer, foliage will turn yellow and will start to die back. Remove these leaves as it will neaten your plants overall appearance. Water well during active growth, keeping soil damp but not too moist. Once blooming has finished, trim off the flower stalk to encourage healthy new growth for the following season.
