About Typha

Typha, also known as Bulrush, are deciduous perennials originating from marginal aquatic areas and are native to Britain. Typha flower during the summer with brown flower spikes, followed by brown seed pods, atop slender grass-like foliage.Typha can grow up to an approximate height of 1-1.5m (50-60in) and an approximate spread f 2.5-4m (8-13ft), however Typha minima is a much smaller variety, growing to a height of 60cm (24in) and a spread of 45cm (18in).

How to plant Typha

Typha are best planted in moist boggy soil of loam, clay, chalk or sand within an acidic, neutral or alkaline PH balance. When planting in water, the depth of the water should be around 40cm (16in) and no more than 10cm (4in) for Typha minima. Typha are best positioned in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.

How to care for Typha

Typha are vigorous growers and will reproduce very quickly if not controlled. Planting it in containers can help prevent the spread of its roots so it does not dominate your pond or bog. Remove dead foliage and old flower stems in the spring when the new growth starts.

How to propagate Typha

It is possible to propagate Typha by dividing plants in the spring.
