Trillium are herbaceous perennials with stately erect stems and large, solitary flowers that gently nod whilst perched upon a plinth of diamond-shaped foliage. These intriguing blooms are exposed to resemble a cup and saucer in shape, taking time to establish but are ultimately long lived. They are best suited to flower beds and borders or used as under-planting for roses and shrubs. You should expect to see Trillium grow to an approximate height of 40-60cm (16-24”) and a spread of 30cm (12”).
Trillium are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand and loam within an acidic or neutral PH balance. They should be planted during the summer at around 7-10cm (2.5-4”) deep and require a thorough watering throughout active growth, especially during periods of drought. It is recommended that they are planted between shrubs that will provide shelter from adverse winds and downpours. Position in an area of part shade or full shade as this is where these plants will thrive best.
Take care not to overwater Trillium as they do not tolerate waterlogging. Apply an annual mulch during the spring consisting of organic matter as this will keep the soil moist and cool whilst suppressing weeds. It may also be beneficial to apply a light application of balanced fertilizer during late winter. Prune dead, diseased or damaged leaves during active growth and carefully cut back damaged leaves.
It is possible to propagate Trillium by seed sown in pots or alternatively by division once the flowering period is over.
