Trifolium are herbaceous perennial plants and are often referred to as ‘Clover’ plants, native to both Europe and central Asia. Attractive clumps of blue-green elliptical-shaped foliage are held upon thick, stately stems. Rounded or candle-like blooms are produced during the summer to provide armfuls of colour for several months. Trifolium are best planted in flower beds, borders or containers within a cottage, informal or wildlife garden. You should expect to see Trifolium grow to an approximate height of 60cm (24”) and a spread of 45cm (18”).
Trifolium are best planted in well-drained soil within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. Allow plenty of room for your plants to spread and water thoroughly and deeply after planting to settle the soil into place. Ensure the soil is well-draining as these plants do not perform in waterlogged or consistently moist soil. Amend the planting area with grit to help with drainage. Trifolium will tolerate a sheltered area of full sun or within part shade as this is necessary for optimum growth.
Trifolium are easy to care for and require very little attention when they are fully established. Water your plants well during periods of dry weather, keeping soil lightly moist throughout active growth. The watering schedule should be reduced in the winter to avoid waterlogging.
