Tradescantia are trailing or tufted perennial plants with sumptuous clusters of blooms that hang elegantly from strong stems. Glossy foliage creates great groundcover to showcase a truly stunning spectacle within your gardens throughout the flowering period. Tradescantia are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, coastal and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Tradescantia grow to an approximate height and spread of 45-60cm (18-24”).
Tradescantia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline and neutral PH balance. Amend the planting area with compost or similar organic material to enrich the soil. Dig a hole that is the same depth and width as the root and space companion plants approximately 30cm (12”) apart. Water thoroughly and deeply once planted to settle the roots in place. Tradescantia are best positioned in part shade but will also tolerate full sun if the soil is kept moist.
Water Tradescantia on a regular basis keeping the soil consistently moist, especially if your plants are being kept in containers. Cut plants back to the ground after the main flush of flowers in July as this will encourage new growth for a second bout of blooms in the autumn.
