About Thuja

Thuja are coniferous evergreen trees that form a stunning conical habit. They are usually grown for their amazing ornamental foliage and small knobbly cones. They are best suited to those who seek a low maintenance style of gardening. Dependant on the variety, you should expect to see your Thuja grow to an approximate height of between 2-20m (7-66’).

How to plant Thuja

Thuja are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They do tend to thrive in soil that retains moisture. Plant in an area that will accommodate its potential mature height and spread without causing detriment to other plants or structures. Ensure the planting area is also protected from adverse weather condition, especially whilst it is young. Thuja prefer a sunny spot where it will thrive to optimum effect.

How to care for Thuja

Water Thuja thoroughly and deeply throughout its life cycle, especially during periods of drought. Surround the base with a thick layer of mulch made up of organic material. Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at the beginning of the growing season. You should not need to prune your Thuja as it naturally grows into its conical shape. However, you may wish to prune any misshapen or unkempt areas.

How to propagate Thuja

It is possible to propagate Thuja by semi-hardwood cuttings.
