Teucrium are herbaceous perennials, deciduous or evergreen shrubs or sub-shrubs that are perfect to fill a gap in any garden. Long spike-like stems bear small aromatic leaves and tubular flowers in abundance. Teucrium are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, coastal and informal garden settings. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 60cm (24”).
Teucrium are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, chalk or loam within a neutral or alkaline PH balance. Lightly amend heavy soils with an application of organic matter as this will help to enrich the planting area. Plant Teucrium so they are level with the soil, spreading the roots outward. Gently back fill with native soil and water thoroughly and deeply to encourage a healthy and extensive root system. Teucrium are best positioned in an area of full sun with some shelter from intense midday heat.
Pruning should be undertaken during late winter or early spring to neaten your plants appearance and to control its shape and size. This should include the removal of dead, old or diseased branches. Leave your soil to dry slightly between applications of water unless during periods of drought. Lightly fertilise plants if necessary to improve the profusion and quality of flowers.
