How to Grow Tecophilaea

About Tecophilaea


Tecophilaea are cormous, herbaceous perennial plants native to Chile with slender sword-shaped foliage and pipe–shaped flowers that glow with vibrant blue or violet shades during spring. Most varieties have stunning white throats to contrast with bold coloured blooms, often releasing heavenly fragrance. Tecophilaea are best suited as patio and container plants within a rock garden. You should expect to see Tecophilaea grow to an approximate height and spread of 10cm (4”).

How to plant Tecophilaea


Tecophilaea are best planted in well-drained soil of loam and sand within an acidic or neutral PH balance. Corms should be planted around 7-12cm (3-5”) deep and spaced 10-15cm apart (4-6”) at the end of summer or during early autumn. They are best positioned in an area of full sun where they will thrive to optimum effect.

How to care for Tecophilaea


Tecophilaea will require regular feeding and thorough watering throughout active growth. You may wish to apply a layer of mulch at the start of winter as this will protect your plants from adverse weather conditions whilst suppressing weeds and adding vital nutrients to the soil.

How to propagate Tecophilaea


It is possible to propagate Tecophilaea by removing offsets during the summer.
