Tanacetum are annuals, subshrubs or evergreen or herbaceous perennials with often ferny, fragrant foliage and daisy-like flowers that appear during the summer. These plants are traditionally a medicinal herb used to treat toothache, arthritis and migraines. Tanacetum are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm (20”).
Tanacetum are best planted in well-drained soil of loam or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Amend the planting area with a thick layer of compost to improve the drainage and place in a sunny part of the garden. Dig a hole that is the same depth and width as the root ball and space plants 20-60cm apart, dependant on their variety. Back fill the planting area and water thoroughly to settle the soil in place.
Once your Tanacetum are in full bloom you may wish to pinch back your plants to encourage a bushier growth habit. Once the flowering period has finished, lightly prune your plants and provide a feed as this will produce a further flush of flowers. Water thoroughly during periods of drought.
