About Syringa

Syringa are deciduous shrubs or trees, with simple, attractive foliage and stunning panicles of compact and highly scented flower heads that cluster together to form a bushy and abundant feature piece. These stunning shrubs and trees are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, coastal and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Syringa grow to an approximate height and spread of 1.5m (5’)

How to plant Syringa

Syringa are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of chalk, clay, sand or loam within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in full sun as this is where they will bloom best, however they will tolerate part shade. The perfect time to plant Syringa is during autumn, spacing each shrub 5-15’ apart (1.5-4.5m) depending on their variety. Make sure you water Syringa thoroughly and deeply at the time of planting, taking care not to distribute too much moisture as they do not like wet feet.

How to care for Syringa

Every spring you should apply a layer of compost beneath the foliage, followed by a generous application of mulch to help retain moisture levels and to suppress the weeds. Water Syringa thoroughly during the summer, especially during periods of drought. Once Syringa have finished flowering, trim your shrub whilst removing any old, dead or damaged branches.

How to propagate Syringa

It is possible to propagate Syringa by softwood cuttings or layering late in the spring or alternatively by grafting in the winter or whilst in bud during the summer.
