About Symphytum

Symphytum are herbaceous perennial plants that were originally used by the Greeks and Romans to remedy ailments and illnesses due to their high volume of Vitamin C. Abundant foliage will create large swathes of lush colour with dainty clusters of nodding flowers that flourish throughout spring. Symphytum grow best within flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. Alternatively, they will make a fantastic groundcover feature. You should expect to see Symphytum grow to an approximate height and spread of 40cm (16”). Please take care when handling Symphytum, as they are highly toxic if ingested into your system.

How to plant Symphytum

Symphytum are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, loam, chalk or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They should be dug around 10-15cm deep (4-6”) and spaced 1m (3’) apart ensuring they are watered thoroughly and deeply to settle into place. Symphytum are best positioned in full sun although they will tolerate part shade, ensuring the soil is kept consistently moist.

How to care for Symphytum

Ensure that Symphytum are kept well-watered as they do not tolerate dry conditions. To encourage a second flush of flowers and to retain healthy foliage, prune the plants hard to ground level after flowering and feed with a liquid fertilizer.

How to propagate Symphytum

It is possible to propagate Symphytum by dividing fleshy roots in spring or by root cuttings in early winter. Alternatively, you may wish to propagate by seed sown in autumn or spring.
