About Sutera

Sutera are creeping annual plants, although some perennial varieties are available in warmer climates. They are also often referred to as Bacopa and can be easily grown in containers or hanging baskets. You will often find them covered in a profusion of tiny blooms over attractive lobed leaves from May to October. You should expect to see Sutera grow up to a height of approximately 10cm (4) and a spread of between 10-50cm (4-20).

How to plant Sutera

Sutera are best planted in fertile, well-drained soil of chalk, clay loam or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. Dig a hole that is at least 15cm (6) deep and the same width as the root ball. Space companion plants 40cm (16) apart and mixing a generous amount of peat moss to the planting area, mixing thoroughly to keep the ground moist. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the soil into place. Sutera are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade.

How to care for Sutera

It is important to retain moisture levels in your soil throughout active growth. You may wish to apply a layer of mulch to keep your plant cool and moist. Sutera will not tolerate cold conditions, so ensure you move them into to a frost-free environment or keep them appropriately protected during colder climates. Dead head Sutera regularly to prolong flowering. There should be no need to prune your plant unless it is to improve its overall shape and structure.

How to propagate Sutera

It is possible to propagate Sutera by layering in autumn or spring. Choose flexible young shoots that can be bent down at ground level.
