About Strobilanthes

Strobilanthes are evergreen or herbaceous perennials or subshrubs with simple, yet stunning ovate leaves that are normally flush in metallic or iridescent colour swathes. Clusters of tubular or funnel-shaped flowers follow on in the autumn, although the foliage colour will often delight us all year round. Strobilanthes are best suited to flower beds or borders and are versatile in most styles of garden. You should expect to see Strobilanthes grow to an approximate height and spread of 1m (40”).

How to plant Strobilanthes

Strobilanthes are best planted in well-drained soil of sand or loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are tolerant to being grown in both a container and within a flower bed or border. Strobilanthes prefer some shade during the height of summer but will tolerate full sun if watered frequently.

How to care for Strobilanthes

You may wish to pinch back the foliage after the flowering period to make a bushier plant or during the spring after any dormancy period (for herbaceous varieties). Provide a light feed at the start of the growing season and again during the summer. Water during periods of sustained drought.

How to propagate Strobilanthes

It is possible to propagate Strobilanthes by seed or by softwood cuttings.
