Stokesia are perennial plants producing evergreen foliage and bright, fluffy vibrant flowers accompanied by a pincushion of feathery disk florets. Flowers bloom from early to mid-summer to make a truly magnificent display. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within an informal or courtyard garden setting. Alternatively, they make fantastic cut flowers. You should expect to see Stokesia grow to an approximate height and spread of 50cm (20”).
Stokesia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand or loam within an acidic or neutral PH balance. For heavy soil, you may wish to amend the planting area with plenty of compost to improve drainage as winter wet will cause detriment to your plant. Dig a hole that is as wide and deep as the root ball and firm into place. Water thoroughly to settle.
Dependant on the variety, you may need to protect your Stokesia from cold harsh winters. In some cases, a thick layer of winter mulch will suffice. Deadhead any spent flowers to encourage additional blooms. Plants can be cut back to basal foliage once the flowering period is over.
