Stachys are annuals, perennials or shrubs with often ovate-shaped, aromatic foliage decorated with erect spikes of two-lipped flowers. These are held by strong, robust and thick stems throughout summer and autumn. They are best suited to flower beds and borders or used as underplanting of roses and shrubs within cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Stachys grow to an approximate height of 1m (3.2’) and a spread of 50cm (20”).
Stachys are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, loam and chalk within an acidic, alkaline and neutral PH balance. Plant Stachys during the spring. You may wish to amend the planting area with a layer of compost, watering thoroughly and deeply. Dig a hole that is the same depth as the root ball, spacing each companion plant 30cm (12”) apart to allow plenty of room to spread. Stachys are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade.
Stachys require very little care and maintenance once fully established. Water the soil when it becomes significantly dry, especially during periods of drought. Take care of Stachys where there has been significant rainfall as this may damage the foliage and ultimately lead to root rot. Spreading a layer of mulch at the base of your Stachys should prevent such an event from taking place. Trim your plant during the spring, removing old, dead and damaged parts of your plant and deadhead spent blooms to encourage a second profusion of flowers.
