Sprekelia are bulbous perennial plants with strong slender stems, strap-shaped foliage and stunning solitary blooms with a downward facing sepal and three upper petals that arch out like the wing-span of a majestic bird. Sophora are best suited as container plants so that they can be easily transported when the colder weather sets in. can expect to see Sophora grow to an approximate height and spread of 10-50cm (4-20”).
Sprekelia are best planted in well-drained soil of loam or sand within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. Sprekelia thrive in a position of full sun. Ensure you plant Sprekelia in a container that can be easily moved when the weather becomes colder. Plant in autumn with the bulb neck and shoulders above the soil level. Water well to settle in place.
Water Sprekelia well during active growth and through periods of drought. Apply a half strength liquid fertiliser on a fortnightly basis when the flowering period has finished. When dormant refrain from watering. Move Sprekelia into a cool, dry place during the winter to protect the bulb from winter wet and frost.
It is possible to propagate Sprekelia by separating offsets in autumn.
