Spiranthes are better known as terrestrial orchids and are tuberous perennial plants. Lance-shaped and linear leaves are displayed upon stately stems which produce masses of orchid-shaped flowers, formed into attractive spiral-like rows from August to late November. They are native to North America and are usually found in grassland or woodland settings. You may wish to plant Spiranthes in flower beds, borders or containers. You should expect to see Spiranthes grow to an approximate height of 60cm (24”) and a spread of 30cm (12”).
Spiranthes are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, loam and sand within an acidic, neutral or alkaline PH balance. They will do well in slightly boggy ground where the planting site should be amended with leaf mould, compost and sand. Place into the garden during the spring, making sure that the planting hole is as deep and as wide as the root ball. Water thoroughly and deeply to settle the roots in place and to encourage the development of a healthy root system.
Spiranthes should be well-watered throughout active growth, reducing the volume required during the winter. These plants carry a permanent culture of fungus in their roots which should never be allowed to dry out as this will often feed your plant. Remove old, dead or damaged foliage to neaten the overall appearance of your Spiranthes.
