Spiraea are deciduous shrubs with simplistic leaves and bushy panicles of showy, flat topped blooms that are held in neat and compact clusters above mounds of rich green foliage during spring and summer. These shrubs are best suited to banks, slopes, flower beds and borders within a cottage or informal garden settings. You should expect to see Spiraea grow to an approximate height and spread of 90cm (36”).
Spiraea are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, chalk or sand within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, ensure there is a space approximately 1.5-3m (5-10’) apart, allowing sufficient space between larger varieties. Dig a hole that is equal to the depth of the root ball and at least twice the width to allow the root system to spread and develop properly. Generally, you should not need to amend the soil unless it is low in sufficient nutrients in which case, apply a generous amount of compost and water thoroughly. These shrubs are best placed in a position of full sun or part shade.
During each spring, you may wish to distribute a layer of compost and mulch to the base of the shrub, as this will retain moisture levels. It is essential to water plants thoroughly during the summer, especially through periods of drought. You may wish to deadhead Spiraea as this will often provoke a second flowering whilst maintaining good overall health for your shrub in the following season. You can remove old, dead or damaged branches at any time.
