Spigelia are annuals, perennials or sub-shrubs with upright stems and sprays of delicate buds that burst to reveal star-shaped flowers with bright yellow throats throughout the summer. An unusual and exotic looking plant that make a fine addition to flower beds and borders within courtyard, coastal and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Spigelia grow to an approximate height of 30cm (12”) and a spread of 40cm (16”).
Spigelia are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, clay and chalk within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, amend the soil with an inch of compost or well-rotten manure and work in well. Ensure the planting hole is just as deep and as wide as the root ball, watering thoroughly once in place. Spigelia are best positioned in full sun or part shade where they will thrive best.
Spigelia are slow to appear so do not become dis-heartened if you do not see signs of growth at the start of summer when companion plants become evident. Once established, Spigelia are low maintenance plants and will require very little care. Water Spigelia regularly, ensuring the soil is kept moist, especially during periods of drought.
It is possible to propagate Spigelia by seed or alternatively by division.
