Sorbaria are large deciduous suckering shrubs, native to China and Tibet with attractive colour changing foliage that burst from a vibrant shade of pink to orange to yellow, topped with white frothy panicles of flowers throughout the summer months. These unique plants are ideal amongst low maintenance flower beds and borders within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Sorbaria grow to an approximate height and spread of 60-100cm (24-40”).
Sorbaria are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, clay, chalk or loam within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sun or part shade. At the time of planting, apply a generous amount of organic material such as rotten leaves or bark to the native soil. Mix and water thoroughly and deeply to create a robust and healthy root system.
Once established, Sorbaria can spread quickly to create small thickets. Whenever necessary, remove the suckers as they appear to restrict the spread of the plant. During the winter, prune your plant back to control and neaten its overall shape and size, alongside removing dead or diseased wood and foliage. It is beneficial to feed Sorbaria early in the growing cycle with an all-purpose fertiliser, as this will aid in the overall health and development of your shrub.
It is possible to propagate Sorbaria by semi-hardwood cuttings during the middle of summer, or alternatively by seed sown in containers within a cold frame during the autumn. Rooted suckers can also be transplanted in winter or in autumn.
