Solanum can be annual, perennial, evergreen or deciduous shrubs or climbers. They have, often scented, flowers with large stamens and simple or pinnately lobed leaves. The flowers are followed by fleshy fruits. They are well-suited to beds, borders and cottage garden styles. Climbing varieties of Solanum are perfect for twining through shrubs or over a fence. You should expect to see your Solanum grow to an approximate height and spread of up to 6m (20ft).
Solanum are best planted in a moist but well-drained soil of sand, clay or chalk within an alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun.
In late winter or early spring after flowering, prune side shoots to within 3 or 4 buds. RHS Pruning group 12. Solanum climbers will require tying in regularly and will need support. Water regularly after planting. Fertilizer can be used in the spring and summer to extend its blooming time.
It is possible to propagate Solanum by semi-hardwood cuttings.
