Schlumbergera are a specific type of cacti that are more commonly known as the ‘Christmas Cacti’ due to their flowering time and reputation for providing a glorious festive display. When in bloom, these plants are truly spectacular - spiky foliage is topped with intriguing and uniquely shaped flowers that are sure to leave a lasting impression, showcasing an abundance of bright and vibrant colour. You should expect to see Schlumbergera grow to an approximate height and spread of 45cm (18”).
You will need to position Schlumbergera so that it is out of direct sunlight but in a well-lit and cool position. As Schlumbergera are predominantly house plants, it is recommended that they are re-potted once a year to maintain ongoing growth and health. They are best transferred to a pot or container where they are planted in a good cactus or loam based compost. Provide a little water so that the soil is no longer dry to the touch.
Schlumbergera require little to no pruning but take note that older plants can become a little congested. It is therefore advised to remove old and damaged stems to make room for newer growth. During active growth, it is recommended that Schlumbergera are fertilised once a month with a tomato feed. If this is not feasible, an all-purpose houseplant fertiliser will be more than beneficial. Like all cacti, Schlumbergera will store moisture inside their fleshy leaves. However, it is recommended that they are treated like a normal houseplant, providing water when the soil becomes dry.
