Schizostylis coccinea are often better known as ‘Hesperantha coccinea’ or the ‘Kaffir Lily’ and are semi-evergreen rhizomatous perennials. They fashion slender, sword-shaped leaves and star-like blooms that flourish from late summer through to late autumn. They make the perfect cut bloom or can be planted within flower beds and borders within a courtyard garden or as a patio feature in containers. You should expect to see Schizostylis coccinea grow to an approximate height of 60cm (24”) and a spread of 30cm (12”).
Schizostylis coccinea are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of sand, loam, chalk or clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. The best time of year to plant Schizostylis coccinea is during early spring. They require a sheltered and sunny position to thrive. At the time of planting, apply a generous amount of compost and mulch around the base of the plant, mixing thoroughly to the native soil. Dig a hole that is the appropriate depth and width for your young plant, allowing space for the roots to expand. Water well to settle the surrounding soil.
Water Schizostylis coccinea freely over the summer periods, especially during times of drought as they will thrive in moist conditions. During winter, cut back unkempt or damaged stems and foliage to retain a pleasing shape and appearance.
It is possible to propagate Schizostylis coccinea by division, which should be undertaken during the spring.
