About Schizophragma

Schizophragma are deciduous shrubs that are commonly referred to as the ‘Japanese Hydrangea Vine’. These plants showcase an exquisite climbing habit with broad, flattened heads of clustered florets that are encompassed by heart-shaped petals and unusual ovate foliage, closely resembling lace cap hydrangeas. Schizophragma are best planted in wall side borders within a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see Schizophragma grow to an approximate height of 6m (20’).

How to plant Schizophragma

Schizophragma are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, clay, sand and chalk within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. Schizophragma are best positioned in a sheltered area of full sun or in part shade. Amend the planting area with a generous amount of organic matter. Plant Schizophragma at least 45cm (18”) away from a wall or structure to allow room for your shrubs to spread and tie in a support until your plants are well-established. After planting, water thoroughly and deeply.

How to care for Schizophragma

Schizophragma will require regular watering during active growth, especially whilst they are young as this will promote healthy development of the root system. Apply a general-purpose fertiliser during spring and provide a support as your shrub matures. Hard pruning is not required but you may wish to remove old, dead and diseased foliage, providing a light trim to retain a healthy shape and pleasing appearance.

How to propagate Schizophragma

It is possible to propagate Schizophragma by softwood cuttings or hardwood cuttings.
