Saururus are marginal aquatic herbaceous perennials native to North America and Asia, with long-stalked ovate leaves. Small flowers in dropping racemes are produced in the summer. Saururus are best suited to boggy ground and pond margins. You should expect to see Saururus grow to an approximate height of up to 1.5m (5ft) and a spread of up to 50cm (20in).
Saururus are best planted in poorly drained soil of sand, clay or loam within a neutral, acidic or alkaline PH balance. The water where you are planting them should be no deeper than 15cm (6in). Saururus do best in either an exposed or sheltered position in sun or partial shade.
Divide the plants regularly so the plants maintain their vigour. Saururus are a low-maintenance plant so do not require much care and attention once they are planted.
It is possible to propagate Saururus by division in the spring.
