Sanguisorba are rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plants with elegant, slender silhouettes that offer extensive aesthetic diversity where small fluffy flowers cluster together to form a feather duster-like appearance upon delicate pinnate leaves. Flowering stems can be best described as unimposing and airy, a characteristic relished in flower beds and borders within a cottage and informal garden. Sanguisorba can grow between 30cm (12”) and 1.8m (6’) in height with a spread of 40cm (16”). Please take care when handling Sanguisorba, as they are highly toxic if ingested into your system.
Sanguisorba are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They will grow well in a position of full sun or part shade, so long as the soil is kept moist. Dig a hole that will accommodate the depth and width of your Sanguisorba, allowing plenty of growing room for roots to spread during immaturity. Gently lower into place and backfill the soil, watering thoroughly and deeply.
Sanguisorba are relatively easy to care for once they are established. They prefer soil that is kept moist therefore it is vital to implement a careful watering schedule. You may need to stake taller varieties, especially when planted in exposed sites. During spring, you can apply a layer of mulch as this will retain moisture levels, suppress weeds and provide vital nutrients during active growth.
