Romneya are suckering sub-shrubs that are often referred to as the ‘Californian Tree Poppy’. These stunning blooms display large, crisp, goblet-shaped blooms with petals that closely resemble tissue paper when looked at closely. Gorgeous bright yellow stamens stand out perfectly and look great against ample dissected foliage that appear in shades of grey-green. Romneya are best situated to flower beds and borders within cottage and informal garden settings. You should expect to see your plants grow to an approximate height of 1.8m (6’) and a spread of 1.5m (5’).
Romneya are best planted in well-drained soil of sand and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, space plants 1.2-2m (4-6’) apart, making sure that the planting hole is the same depth as the root ball with a little extra width for roots to settle and spread out. Choose an appropriate site where they can develop to their mature size, ensuring they do not cause detriment to companion plants or obstruct passages or walkways. They should be positioned in an area of full sun where you can really admire their cheery and flamboyant disposition.
Once planted, Romneya are easy to grow but may be a little difficult to control. It may be necessary for you to prune your Romneya to ground level once it becomes older and larger. Ensure that you water Romneya well until they are better established. Until this plant reaches maturity, you may wish to apply a balanced fertiliser early in the growing season.
