Pulmonaria are herbaceous or semi-evergreen rhizomatous perennials, often known as Lungwort. These plants showcase intriguing and attractive buds that gradually uncurl to display pretty flowers, thick, upright stems and impressive white or silver speckled leaves during the spring. They are best suited to flower beds and borders within courtyard, cottage, woodland and informal garden settings. You should expect to see Pulmonaria grow to an approximate height and spread of 30-45cm (12-18”).
Pulmonaria are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of clay, chalk and loam within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. These plants enjoy dappled shade and will often struggle to develop if positioned in an area that is exposed to full sun. It is often recommended that these plants are at their best when planted beneath shrubs and trees where the top soil can be kept moist and cool.
Pulmonaria will thrive when kept in cool, moist soil so it is vital that they are watered regularly. Apply a generous layer of mulch during the spring as this will retain moisture levels whilst suppressing weeds and keeping soil cool. You may wish to deadhead Pulmonaria after the flowering period to prevent seeds from spreading in beds and borders. You may also wish to cut back Pulmonaria if the foliage becomes untidy – this is best undertaken in late February. Water well after deadheading or pruning.
It is possible to propagate Pulmonaria by division.
