About Prunus

Prunus are deciduous or evergreen trees or shrubs with brilliantly bright blooms that flower prolifically during the spring. They are renowned for their often interesting and attractive autumnal foliage that infuses rich colour and architecture to any garden. Once flowers fade, some varieties will even bare edible fruits and eye-catching ornamental bark. It is suggested that they are used as part of a low maintenance and architectural addition to a cottage or informal garden setting. You should expect to see your trees/shrubs grow to an approximate height and spread of 2.5m (8’). Please take care when handling Prunus, as they are highly toxic if ingested into your system.

How to plant Prunus

Prunus are best planted in moist, well-drained soil of loam, chalk, sand and clay within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. At the time of planting, amend your soil with plentiful well-rotted garden compost and mix thoroughly. Choose a suitable site that will accommodate the optimum growth of your Prunus ensuring it does not cause obstruction to companion plants or public access areas. Stake firmly in place and water thoroughly.

How to care for Prunus

Pruning should be undertaken during the summer to reduce the risk of fungus and disease. Remove old, dead or diseased wood to maintain a pleasing appearance whilst enhancing your shrub or trees overall health. Water Prunus throughout active growth until they are fully established and apply a generous layer of mulch during the spring.

How to propagate Prunus

It is possible to propagate Prunus by softwood cuttings in early summer.
