About Primula

Primula are herbaceous or semi-evergreen perennials that form a rosette of modest sized leaves, held upon stately stems. The flowers are simple yet beautiful and are either bell or salver-shaped forming attractive clusters of colour. The well-loved British Primrose are perfect within flower beds and borders within cottage and informal gardens. You should expect to see Primula grow to an approximate height and spread of 60cm (24”). These plants are native to China although are much associated to a typical British garden.

How to plant Primula

Primula are best planted during September when temperatures start to cool. They should be placed in moist, well-drained soil of loam within a neutral or acidic PH balance. Primula are best positioned in an area of part shade as this is where they will thrive best. It is recommended that the planting area is amended with organic matter to enrich the soil, enhancing the chance of healthy growth and development during immaturity. At the time of planting, primroses should be placed 6-12” (15-30cm) apart and 4-6” (10-15cm) deep.

How to care for Primula

Primula will benefit from a small application of organic fertiliser throughout active growth. It is recommended that you should regularly prune Primula by removing dead leaves and spent blooms, as this will encourage a further flush of flowers during the following season. Primula should be watered on a regular and consistent basis until they become fully established.

How to propagate Primula

It is possible to propagate Primula by seed or alternatively by division in the early spring time.
