Potentilla are herbaceous perennials, deciduous shrubs or annuals that are native to the Western Himalayas. Clusters of rounded saucer-shaped petals and compact lush green foliage are held upon delicate wiry stems. It is recommended that these plants are positioned in flower beds and borders within cottage or informal garden settings. You can expect to see Potentilla to grow up to an approximate height of 60cm and a spread 50cm.
Potentilla are best planted in well-drained soil of sand, loam or chalk within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best placed in a position of full sun, although a little shade in very hot conditions will keep the plant blooming for longer. Amend your soil with compost and loosen it with a fork to improve the overall drainage. Dig a hole that will accommodate the size of your plant, spacing companion plants approximately 40cm (16”) apart. Water thoroughly to settle your plant in place and to encourage a healthy root system.
Potentilla will require a thorough watering in periods of prolonged drought, although regular watering is not necessary. During late spring, you may wish to apply a layer of compost or a fertiliser to as this will encourage healthy growth and development. At the end of the flowering period, cut out any old wood or alternatively cut back to ground level as this will allow it to regrow with vigour. Apply organic mulch as this will retain moisture levels whilst suppressing weeds.
