Aspect: Full sun
Flowering: Spring, summer and autumn (depending on variety)
Hardiness: Fully Hardy
Potentilla are best planted in a well-drained soil of sand, loam or chalk within an acidic, alkaline or neutral PH balance. They are best placed in a position of full sun, although a little shade in very hot conditions will keep them blooming for longer. They look best in flower beds and borders within cottage or informal garden settings.

Amend your soil with compost and loosen with a fork to improve the overall drainage. Dig a hole that will accommodate the size of your plant, spacing companion plants approx. 40 cm (16in) apart. Water thoroughly to settle your plant in place and to encourage a healthy root system.
Water thoroughly during periods of prolonged drought, but regular watering is not necessary. In late spring apply a layer of compost or fertiliser to encourage healthy growth and development. At the end of the flowering period cut out any old wood or alternatively cut back to ground level to allow it to regrow with vigour. Apply organic mulch as this will retain moisture and suppress weeds.
It is possible to propagate Potentilla by seed or division during autumn or spring.
