Pontederia are herbaceous perennials native to marginal aquatic areas in America. Clumps of ovate or lance-shaped green foliage are formed with spikes of flowers in summer. Pontederia are best located in shallow water at the edge of a pond or in a bog. They can be planted in aquatic baskets in a water garden. You should expect to see your plant grow to an approximate height of 1-1.5m (40-60in) and an approximate spread of 0.5-1m (20-40in).
Pontederia are best planted in moist, boggy and fertile soil of clay or loam within an acidic, neutral or alkaline PH balance. They are best positioned in an area of full sun where they will perform at their best. Pontederia are best planted in the spring. Contain in an aquatic basket lined with hessian.
Cut back Pontederia in autumn after flowering to tidy the plant up. Pontederia is a low-maintenance plant.
It is possible to propagate Pontederia by division in spring or by seed sown in containers.
