Polygonum is best planted in a moist but well-drained soil and are best positioned in an area of sun or part shade. They are well-suited to covering unsightly structures, walls or fences as they are fast growing climbers.

Water thoroughly after planting and keep soil moist whilst still ensuring good drainage. Polygonum are tolerant of most soil conditions.
In spring each year, prune the plant back to fit the space that you want it to grow in, as they are extremely fast growing.
It is possible to propagate Polygonum by hardwood cuttings taken in autumn and positioned in a cold frame.
